Random Act of Kindness #2

January 13, 2012

This week a co-worker sent out an email saying a friend of hers was looking for a cheap TV and a DVD player. With my oldest son getting a TV for Christmas, he gave his TV to my youngest son, and so now we had an extra TV. I told my friend I had one, but didn’t need any money for it. He could have it. Well, turns out her friend had been recently homeless, living with her family at times, and at others, living in abandoned houses. Recently, he worked out a deal with an apartment complex owner to provide maintenance in exchange for a place to stay. Now he was needing some furnishings for his apartment. As I was going through closets last Saturday, I thought maybe instead of giving my husband’s and son’s clothes to Goodwill, maybe he’d like them. Well, turns out he was my son’s size, so along with the TV, I packed up a box of clothes to give him too. It was a great feeling to think that maybe the TV and clothes could help make life a little easier, a little less daunting, and maybe put a smile on his face. Pass it on!

Coming out of the Closet, 137 Times

January 12, 2012

You’ve seen the Goodwill commercial where a woman is standing in front of her closet, trying to hang up some clothes. She’s putting all her strength into moving the clothes over just enough to squeeze in the few in her hand. Welcome to my closet. I can’t remember the last time I’ve went through it. I still had clothes that I wore when I was working out all the time. Yeah, I’ve come to the realization that I’ll probably never be a size 2 again. Hate to say it, but it’s true. So, to start simplifying my life, to get rid of the frustration I have every morning when I decide what I’m going to wear, and to stop having to struggle putting up my clean clothes, I spent the afternoon Saturday going through my closet. Clothes I haven’t worn in some time, clothes that were out of style, clothes that didn’t fit… all were folded up and put in a box for Goodwill. All 137 pieces. It feels so good to have my closet back again!  And, while I was on a purging high, I went to my son’s closet and went through his clothes too. My husband even went through his clothes! One more closet to go, my youngest son’s, and then we’ll have a truck full of boxes for Goodwill. Hmm, what to do with all these empty hangers?  I say, let’s go shopping!

50 Random Acts of Kindness

My first random act of kindness was pretty simple. I have done it before and have actually been on the receiving end a few times. Most every morning before I go into work, I run through Starbucks’ drive-thru to get a cup of hot chocolate. Seriously, if you’ve never tried their hot chocolate, you need to. But I warn you, every hot chocolate purchased somewhere else or made at home will pale in comparison and will be a disappointment. Anyway, I digress. See the car in my rear view mirror?  Little did she know, but whatever she was ordering was getting paid for by me. I hope she enjoyed her treat and repaid a random act of kindness to someone else that day. Pass it on!
